About Me

My photo
I am a 42 year old woman that is about as happy and content as one person can be. My husband of 21 years and our 15 year old daughter live on five and a half acres out in the country. We moved from the city four years ago and never looked back. I homeschool our daughter. We also love our animals. Our daughter has a miniature horse and two rabbits. We also have a border collie, two cats (again), two pot belly pigs, four peafowl, three emus, 2 llamas and an undetermined number of chickens, lets just say ohhh about 200. I have many breeds, from layers to fancy chickens. I love poultry shows, I love fowl in general as I have come to find out through having more than just chickens. Chickens will always be my first love though. I do show some of my birds occasionally.

Johnnys Show Results

P2170009

Johnny...the man in black..with an attitude to match his color.

I tried to tell the man testing birds for disease. I told him, warned him that Johnny will bite, and it hurts.

"Aw he will be alright...I can handle him".

Okay...your funeral.

He pulls Johnny out of the carrier and there was much flapping and then Johnny found the webbing in between the mans first two fingers and bit...and held on...and shook his head like a rabid dog tearing at a hunk of meat. That was going to leave a mark...yes it was.

It left a mark alright. No blood of course...but a long dark bruised blood colored looking mark. Hey I tried to tell him. I apologized for his behavior..he just waved it off and said don't even worry about it.

******************

As I went around to find Johnnys hole...I saw another Sumatra roo. Oh man. He was just gorgeous. Found out something else. If you have a long tailed breed, and you dont want the tail messed up before the show...you better order a double capacity coop when you are entering your bird. :( This guy had a double coop, and I was left with a regular size one. Johnnys tail was constantly being battered and splayed in between the cage wire.

I guess I subconciously was not happy about all of this development. I thought I had a good looking bird! But Johnnys competition...was bar none. The other Sumatra roo won Grand Champion of Large Fowl. I will admit, he deserved it too, but I cant lie, I was jealous of this. I didnt even take a picture of this guy...like I say, subconciously I must have been struggling with the fact that I didnt have a snowballs chance in hell with Johnny considering what stood in the next pen. OH well, facts are facts, and the other guy was superb. No way around that.

Because Johnny is very difficult I did not even attempt any indoor pictures...so the one of him at the show is all I have for now.

****************

This was my last bird...and even though I didnt win a thing, that is not why I go. I go because I enjoy it, enjoy the people, the birds, and just the whole thing.

I want to thank everyone for their kind comments on my birds. You wait and see, I am going to study up on these little things like stubs and other little things that I might not yet know about that could disqualify them. I will be ready next year! :)

I will say, every year I go, its more and more fun, so I have everything to gain, and nothing to lose.

I had to chuckle at Johnny getting a hold of that mans webbing ~ maybe he'll listen the next time.  Johnny looks gorgeous in this picture, the color of his feathers is awesome.  I cannot imagine what the other one looked like if you thought you didn't have a chance.  Too bad you didn't know about the double coop before hand - oh well, live & learn.  It sounds like you had a great time at the show and I think you did very well.

If Johnny had of had a bigger cage he would have had more of a winning chance. He is a very handsome bird. Helen

Isn't it nice to have people who are actually interested in your chickens?  I do love J-land, and I love journaling because if people are reading, you know it's because they choose to.

He's a beauty!!
Don't you think maybe the man really was hurt and didn't want to let you know just how much.  Men do that.

How wonderful to be able to share your apssion and learn from other handlers at the show!
