About Me

My photo
I am a 42 year old woman that is about as happy and content as one person can be. My husband of 21 years and our 15 year old daughter live on five and a half acres out in the country. We moved from the city four years ago and never looked back. I homeschool our daughter. We also love our animals. Our daughter has a miniature horse and two rabbits. We also have a border collie, two cats (again), two pot belly pigs, four peafowl, three emus, 2 llamas and an undetermined number of chickens, lets just say ohhh about 200. I have many breeds, from layers to fancy chickens. I love poultry shows, I love fowl in general as I have come to find out through having more than just chickens. Chickens will always be my first love though. I do show some of my birds occasionally.

Chicken Show Prep (Kuckoo and Coco)

After finishing Johnny I worked up the energy to do the next two. I mean, how bad could it be?

I figured it best to get Kuckoo out first. If I tried to get Coco he might go on the defense and try to flog (kick and spur) me. He didnt want any part of it, but with a little effort I was able to get in there and get my hands around his body and pull him on out. I put him in the cage and went on to get Coco.

There is one good thing about these chickens with big hairdos. They dont really see you coming...lol. I was able to pick up Coco without any problem. I had her before she knew I was there. She is relatively easy going anyway.

With them both set into the cage I rolled around to the patio and the picnic table once more. Same process...but much much easier. No kicking, biting, flailing about. Just got it done and got their pen dusted and hayed, and back they went. I was SO glad they were cooperative. I really expected Kuckoo to be more aggressive, but he really wasnt at all.

With Johnny being a black bird, he most likely will not be needing a bath. All a bath will do for a black bird is dull the shiny feathers, and we dont want that.

With Kuckoo and Coco...they are black AND white...so yes, they will be getting a bath and blow dry. Probably this weekend. I hope, if I have time.

*******************

Next on the list will be Thelma and Louise, the two silkie pullets and then lastly I will be doing Rod, my best Sultan roo. He will need the most pampering so I am saving him til last and he will stay inside, and so will the silkies in holding pens to moniter their feathered feet and keep them clean and white.

These next three will be easy...and I will indeed have pictures of bathes and blow dries. :)

Hi, not sure how I got to your journal.
I am not a chicken breeder/raiser, although as a child I did raise two Easter chicks (Abbot and Costella), in the 1940's. Grandmother finally decided they would mlake a nice meal.

I got tired just reading about your morning of starting the prep for the show. Sounds like a lot of effort to me.
Hope you do well at the show and look forward to seeing the brood in pictures. Good luck, Bill

Hi kelly,    I hope that all is going good at your house, and that you three and all of those beautiful chickens are feeling good. Mary and wish that we could come to that show, but guess we could not make it. Good entry today.

Anyone ever tell you that you're chicken crazy?  lol  No way would I go through all that trouble (and blood loss) to have a chicken look pretty.  ;)  I do just LOVE LOVE LOVE Kuckoo and Coco though.  They are the coolest chickens I've ever seen.  They have a very 60's "outfit" on.  ;)  Get some food coloring and have tie dyed chickens, very groovy.  ;)  Someday I would love to have a couple of those.  People would never believe that they're chickens.
