About Me

My photo
I am a 42 year old woman that is about as happy and content as one person can be. My husband of 21 years and our 15 year old daughter live on five and a half acres out in the country. We moved from the city four years ago and never looked back. I homeschool our daughter. We also love our animals. Our daughter has a miniature horse and two rabbits. We also have a border collie, two cats (again), two pot belly pigs, four peafowl, three emus, 2 llamas and an undetermined number of chickens, lets just say ohhh about 200. I have many breeds, from layers to fancy chickens. I love poultry shows, I love fowl in general as I have come to find out through having more than just chickens. Chickens will always be my first love though. I do show some of my birds occasionally.

Objects In Mirror Are Larger Than They Appear

Its a fine Monday morning here in Northwest Georgia. It is going to be just as beautiful and warm today as it was yesterday. We had a fine weekend. Shelby got her rabbits out and let them have some time on the grass. We trust Tyler not to run off. He is always very good..plus, well, he is old as the hills...for a rabbit, so I doubt we will see him sprinting around like a spring chicken. ;) He has always been this way, always calm, cool and collected. The other two, especially Peter, we are not so sure about. Buster never seems to mind anything, whatever is going on, he just takes it all in stride. Peter is a bit of a nervous nelly though...so I got out the playpen for these two.

*******************

You really don't appreciate how big Tyler is...til he is sitting next to two regular sized rabbits!

Tyler got a really good brushing yesterday along with his time out on the grass. As he has gotten old, he tends to let himself go. His tail was as flat as a beavers tail..so I got the rabbit brush out and fluffed his tail back up and gave him a good brushing on his rear...he was a bit knotty back there. I don't even know if he can reach back there anymore...or if he even cares to. He is five and a half years old now..that is old for a large breed rabbit. They usually dont live past about five. So we help him out best we can in the grooming department.

Tyler easily weighs twenty pounds...after picking him up yesterday I am thinking maybe a few more than that. That is normal for a Flemish Giant.

Shelby has a good time out there sitting with them in the warm sunshine. All three rabbits seemed to be enjoying themselves as well. I always like to see her spend time with her animals. :)

I didnt get a chance to do any practice with the gun this weekend. We were busy with so many other projects with the nice weather. We needed some bales of hay for target practice too...and didn't get around to getting them until Sunday afternoon.

*********************

I was beginning to think I had finally finished off my predators with the stuffed chicken body. I decided on buying some chicken drumsticks for new bait. Slice the leg down the side, open up the meat away from the bone and you have a nice pocked of meat to stuff some poison in. Took some twine and bound it back shut.

I put this out Friday night...nothing came.

Put it out Saturday night...nothing came.

Sunday night..something took one of the two drumsticks. Wonder why it took just one? It won't be back for the second one, I can guarantee that.

All chickens staying locked up at night, no free buffet meals here..unless you want to take a dirt nap.

So this is going to be part of keeping chickens, til I can get these last stubborn few to go into one of the houses. Sure would be easier just to be able to go out and close the doors to everything without rounding up the stragglers. Oh well, maybe they will get it eventually.

********************

Friday at the Tractor Supply they will have layer chicks. I plan on being there when the doors open as they have advertized the breeds they will have available. One of the breeds they will have is a breed I have been wanting for some time now. Golden laced wyandottes. Pete is a golden laced wyandotte, but he has no ladies..so we are going to fix that. :) He should be happy come about August when they are grown.

Oh your rabbits are adorable!  We had two (my kids SAID they would take care of them) and who ended up doing it!?  MOM! So mom got tired of doing EVERYTHING and told the kids they  had to find homes for them.  They ended up going to a rabbit sanctuary  and they are SO spoiled!  Our friends raise LLAMA and they have about 25 rabbits too.  This woman has a "rabbit room" and it doesn't even smell at all!  She has a nice new home but you would never know she keeps animals in there.  It makes me happy that they went to a good home.  I really miss them tho!  I even missed clipping their nails :(

Hi Kelly, my name is BJ  I don't have a journal I just read them. My daughter lives on the west coast , and like you she has all kinds of chickens, could you send me the reciepe that you fix for your critters to get rid of them. She has lost so many of her chickens in the last year. They put a camera up this weekend to find out what is doing it. I told her about your journal, but her time is very limited on the computer. By the time she gets home from work , dinner , kid taking drivers school, house well you know how that works...Thanks, have a good day and hopefully you got rid of your critters. She thinks hers is coyotes. E-mail is bmorse2b@charter.net...

Bet the rabbits loved their little outing. You sure make sure all you chickens have boyfriends and girlfriends. You're such a good chicken mommy. Paula

It is a cloudy day in Kansas. lol That sounds like my German Shepherd. Wow! He is a big rabbit. Maybe the other stuff killed some. May be more than one coming for the food. Blessings, Janie

Tyler is so huge compared to the other two. He is trying to be close to them laying up close to the cage like that. Seems like one predator strangler was still around. Hopefully they won't be after last night. Strong storms are moving into this area tonight and early tomorrow morning. I always dread stormy weather. Thanks for sharing your rabbit pics. Helen

Tyler is just amazing.  I think everyone enjoyed the sun except me.  I'm still sick and in the house, feeling awful.  Hope to be able to get out soon.  I hope you get the chickens you want.

Wow, Tyler is huge!  He would make my rabbits look like dwarfs...well that is what they are. LOL.  Glad to hear you are feeling better about your chickens safety now.  Wonder if our Tractor Supply will have chicks this weekend too?  It is still pretty chilly here overall.
