About Me

My photo
I am a 42 year old woman that is about as happy and content as one person can be. My husband of 21 years and our 15 year old daughter live on five and a half acres out in the country. We moved from the city four years ago and never looked back. I homeschool our daughter. We also love our animals. Our daughter has a miniature horse and two rabbits. We also have a border collie, two cats (again), two pot belly pigs, four peafowl, three emus, 2 llamas and an undetermined number of chickens, lets just say ohhh about 200. I have many breeds, from layers to fancy chickens. I love poultry shows, I love fowl in general as I have come to find out through having more than just chickens. Chickens will always be my first love though. I do show some of my birds occasionally.

June Bugs in July

The GreenJuneBeetle is a bit late this year. I guess this year the beetle decided to be a July Beetle. I have never seen so many as this year though. You can walk outside and hear them all...buzzing and banging into the house. They are truly swarming right now. This makes for great fun and feast for chickens. I just couldn't let them go without on a day like today so I let them out. They are all having a great time catching that little crunchy delicacy right now. We have a thunderstorm rolling in same as we have every afternoon just about all week so that may literally put a damper on their fun. Here is one of our master june bug catchers. She is also one of "Ians hens' about this time of year. He likes to catch the bugs and tries to give them to someone that will come to him and take it, but they don't get him all the time and don't see what he is trying to do, except this barred rock hen, SHE knows and she is always there for her treats from him. He isn't here to catch them and feed them to her right now though, so she has had to do all the work to get her little green crunchy treats.

If you look closely below her over that weed leaf is a green blur...that was one of them flying by. That is how many there are out there! You can easily get shots of them in a picture. Can you see the one she has there? Crunchy! Mmmmm! ;)

I have a couple of videos of the girls chasing the june bugs around. I will post them on a seperate entry when they are both loaded.

We have seen a few June bugs this year but not many. I have heard a few July flys making their noise. I did see the bug in that picture. I bet those videos are so funny. Hugs, Helen

Neat picture, I'm going to ste...., "borrow" a copy. By the way, do you think it's wise to take pictures of the girls when they're both loaded? <grin>

Haven't seen any June bugs here yet. Mel had a sister-in-law from Illinois who was deathly afraid of june bugs. Its odd what different people are afraid of. She wasn't afraid of anything usually. When they get to flying around they can hit sooo hard. Me, I'm afraid of scorpions. Paula

Hi Kelly~
How are you?? Sorry I haven't visited in awhile--my new job has just been kickin' my butt...LOL. But I'm trying to get back into the swing of things.
I want to give you a GREAT organic insect (among other things---won't hurt your chickens or other pets) magazine and name: ARBICO ORGANICS. Go to
www.arbico-organics.com and order a catalog. They can get rid of EVERYTHING safely: flies, your beetles, help your soil, any kind of ant, fertilizers, weed control and so much more! The catalog will arive fast. The only bad part is some of the products don't ship to certain states, so be careful to watch that it can be shipped to GA ok? I use these products and they WORK---even for scorpions! One of the best things is it STOPS moths from getting into my nice clothes and of all things my quilting material (s), even though I keep them in a nice concealed box. I was dreading having to use stinky mothballs...EWWWWW (lol)
Hope this helps :)

Take good care!
Huggers,
Gayla

I'm beginning to see them here too.  When we were kids....we'd catch them & tie a string around one of it's legs & fly them like a kite!  Silly huh.  We enjoyed it though.

That is so funny you said June Beetle.  A few weeks ago the hubby and I were floating in the pool with the light on with June bugs dropping like rain.  A frog came out to the bushes so my DH toss a wiggling June bug at it.  Down the hatch!  Bye-bye June bug.  Then we started tossing it more and it continued eating until one of the dogs got nosey!

I hate those things, we called them June Bugs too and we had them in Texas BAD!   If we left the porch light on and walked in or out they would dive bomb you and attack you!   If I only knew then all I needed was a chicken!

We are having them now too and they bite!  I have been bitten twice now and they are the only bug around at the time so I know it is them.  I will have to look and see if our chickens are feasting.
